How does ePTFE membrane differ from standard PTFE and why does it matter?
ePTFE (expanded PTFE) undergoes a specialized biaxial stretching process that creates a controlled, interconnected microporous network. This porous structure enables the physical sieving mechanism that standard non-expanded PTFE cannot provide — it is this porosity that delivers the unique combination of storm-level waterproofing and high breathability. The stretching process also contributes to the material’s ultra-lightweight and flexible characteristics.
Is PTFE/ePTFE membrane worth the higher investment compared to TPU?
For professional outdoor, alpine, military and extreme environment applications, PTFE/ePTFE is unquestionably worth the investment. Its superior moisture permeability (often 2-3× higher than TPU), extreme temperature tolerance, chemical resistance and long-term durability justify the premium. Does extreme temperature affect the fabric performance?
